How can I tell if my house is single or three-phase?

The easiest way to determine whether your home is single or three-phase is to look at your service provider’s meter, usually located outside your home or in a utility room. If the meter has one fuse underneath, it is likely to be providing single-phase power. If the meter has three fuses, it is likely to be providing three-phase power.

If you are unable to check the meter you could also inspect the main electrical switchboard, though we don’t advise you to touch anything inside as this is best left for a qualified electrician. If you do go ahead, locate the main electrical switchboard in your house; it is usually mounted on an outside wall or in a utility room. Open the panel door and examine the circuit breakers or fuses.

Count the number of circuit breakers: Look for the circuit breakers or fuses in the panel. If you see a single row of breakers, usually ranging from 10 to 20 breakers, then it is likely a single-phase system. Each breaker represents a circuit that supplies power to different areas or appliances in your home.

Look for multiple bus bars: In a three-phase system, there will be three separate bus bars running horizontally across the panel. Each bus bar connects to a different phase. If you open the panel and see three separate bars instead of one, then your house likely has a three-phase supply.

Still unsure?

Consult an electrician: If you are unsure or unable to determine the phase of your electrical supply, it is recommended to consult a licensed Perth-based electrician. They can inspect your electrical system and provide accurate information about your house's phase configuration.

Remember, working with electrical systems can be dangerous. If you have any doubts or concerns, it is best to seek professional assistance to ensure your safety and the integrity of your electrical system.
